Roofing in Cabra and Phibsborough: the houses we know best
Cabra is largely made up of houses built by Dublin Corporation from the 1930s to the 1950s, when Cabra East and later Cabra West were laid out to rehouse families from the inner city. These are mostly two-storey terraced and semi-detached houses, solidly built, with simple pitched roofs, chimneys on the party walls and in many cases flat-roofed porches or rear extensions added by later owners. Along Cabra Road itself and into Phibsborough there are older Victorian and Edwardian red-brick houses with natural slate roofs, rear returns and cast iron gutters, and the same pattern carries on through the terraces and small cottages of Stoneybatter.
Many Cabra roofs have been re-covered at some point, but plenty still carry tiles or slates that are seventy or more years old, and the first thing we do on any job is work out what is actually up there. On older slate roofs the nails corrode, slates slip, and chimney flashings crack. Re-tiled roofs often have concrete tiles that are themselves now thirty to forty years old, with moss, loose ridges and worn underlay. Because so many houses are terraced, the chimney stacks and the line of the roof where one house meets the next are common sources of leaks, and a problem next door can show up as damp in your own attic.
Flat roofs are everywhere in the area, on porches, kitchen extensions, back rooms and garages, and many are on their second or third covering. Original timber fascias and soffits that have been painted for decades are frequently rotten at the joints, and blocked or sagging gutters are a constant on streets lined with mature trees.

Frequently asked questions
Where are you based?
SA Roofing is based at 85 Cabra Road, Dublin 7, D07 H564, so Cabra and the surrounding streets are right on our doorstep.
My terraced house has damp in the attic near the party wall. What causes that?
On terraced houses this is often the shared chimney stack, cracked flashing or a gap in the roof covering where two houses meet. We inspect the area and explain where the water is getting in, including whether it is coming from the neighbouring roof.
Can you replace the flat roof on my porch or back extension?
Yes. We repair and replace flat roofs on porches, kitchen extensions, back rooms and garages using felt and torch-on systems.
Do you also work on the older houses along Cabra Road and in Phibsborough?
We do. We repair natural slate roofs, chimney flashings and gutters on the Victorian and Edwardian houses of Cabra Road, Phibsborough, Stoneybatter and Glasnevin, as well as the later housing in the area.
